Dr. Jerry Yoo

I’m blessed and grateful to have met so many runners of ALL levels through Next Level Physio, our Fleet Feet community partners, and my own personal racing experiences.  The running community is contagious- the people are awesome and like-minded in their desire to do what most people don’t seek to do—become the best version of themselves.

So, you’ve decided to kick it up a notch in 2025—I love it and I’m here to support you every step of the way.

You see, running isn’t just about burning calories; it’s a ticket to longevity, better mental clarity, well-rounded fitness, and a more resilient mind and body. But let’s get you started on the right foot (literally). Whether you’re new to running or a seasoned marathoner, here are three key things I recommend you focus on in 2025.

Key Takeaways:

  1. Improve your running form to prevent injury
  2. Beat overwhelm and burnout with expert coaching
  3. Don’t underestimate the importance of the right shoes.

1. Get Your Running Form Checked—It’s a Game-Changer

Who taught you how to run?

That’s often the first question I ask runners coming in with injuries. More often than not, the answer is, "Uh, me?"

When I “retire” someday, my one bucket list item is to teach kids how to run right.  The younger they start, the more likely they won’t suffer from the injuries that plague adults.

People often think that running is just “putting one foot in front of the other,” but in reality, proper running form can mean the difference between enjoying the journey or being sidelined by injuries.

At Next Level Physio, we specialize in analyzing running mechanics for both beginners and seasoned athletes. Whether you're prepping for your first 5K or looking to shave seconds off your marathon time, a running assessment can pinpoint inefficiencies and prevent common issues like IT band pain, hamstring strains, plantar fasciitis, Achilles pain, shin splints, or runner’s knee.

2. Dial in Your Run Programming with Expert Coaching

Let’s be real—”winging it” with your running plan often leads to burnout, injury, or plateau. To build endurance, strength, and speed while avoiding overtraining, you need a structured plan. Whether your goal is to complete a 10K or become a triathlon powerhouse, having a personalized plan to help you succeed is critical.

And here’s the bonus: you’ll have access to a community of runners who are as dedicated as you are, which makes training even more rewarding. Plus, nothing beats accountability when it’s paired with expert advice.

As someone who has personally benefited from coaching to PR in my races, I can vouch for its value!

3. Invest in the Right Shoes—Your Feet Will Thank You

Not all running shoes are created equal. Wearing the wrong pair can lead to unnecessary discomfort or worse—injuries. Personally, I use zero-drop running shoes with a wide toe box because my feet are on the wider side, and I’ve trained for decades as a forefoot/midfoot striker. But everyone has a different starting point.

That’s why I recommend you visit your favorite Fleet Feet Store for a professional fitting to ensure you get the right shoes for your unique foot structure. Think of it as the foundation of your running journey—start strong, finish stronger.
